1. In January, the Chinese New Year Festival is celebrated towards the end of the month and the beginning of February. It is celebrated through colourful decorations, parades, shopping and culinary activities.
2. February is the month for the solemn Procession of the Passion of Christ March, which is unique to Macau.
3. March begins with the feast of Tou Tei, which is a feast held to honour the Earth God and also, Easter, which is a very important festival here and is celebrated enthusiastically with Easter eggs and cakes being sold.
4. The Macau Arts Festival also takes place in the month of February showcasing Chinese opera, music and dance performances, art exhibitions and theatre acts. It provides visitors with a comprehensive and colourful idea of Macau’s cultural and historical heritage.
5. April is the month for the Pak Tai Festival, celebrated through Chinese opera at the Pak Tai Temple and the A-Ma Festival, honouring Macau’s most popular deity, held at the A-Ma Temple.
6. The unusual and very unique Drunk Dragon Festival takes place in May, giving visitors a look into Macanese folk stories.
7. The colourful Tam Kong Festival is held in the months of May and June. This festival includes the solemn Our Lady of Fatima procession, to commemorate the miracle of Fatima that occurred in Portugal in 1917, and the popular Dragon Boat Festival involving local and foreign teams in the event.
8. August plays host to the two important feasts – Feast of Maidens, which is considered important for unmarried women and Hungry Ghosts Macau Festival, which is conducted to appease the souls of the ancestors of the Macanese people. An important event occurring either in September or October, based on the lunar calendar, is the Moon Macau Festival involving the making of cakes in a special manner and observing the full moon at night, with exquisite hand lanterns and lamps. Also during this time is the famous International Fireworks Display Contest, which is the largest of its kind in the world and attracts experts from all over the world.
9. Held exclusively in October is the International Music Macau Festival which brings some of the finest talents from the field of classical music, choirs, and orchestras from all over the world culminating in Opera. The shows take place in culturally relevant places throughout Macau.
10. Macau Golf Open also takes place in the month of October and is popular among golf enthusiasts.
11. November offers two enjoyable events; one being the Macau Grand Prix at the Guia Circuit, bringing excitement and anticipation with it, as it is Macau’s most famous international level event. The other enjoyable event this month is Macau Food Festival, involving some of the best restaurants in Macau showcasing authentic Asian foods, making it a culinary delight for visitors.
12. Rounding up an eventful year, December sees Macau celebrating Christmas and New Year with decorations and fireworks and a holiday.
