“Zen International”– International PMs-(Dollar Resumes “Orderly” Demise)
“Zen International” the Asian-based investment broker believes that the US dollar’s drift lower will continue as long as equities and commodities remain buoyant.
Mild increases in consumer sentiment and some less-bad economic data has encouraged investors to sell the dollar in favor of higher-yielding assets including equities.
The dollar index (DXY) which tracks the dollar against the currencies of six major US trading partners has dropped below 77 which many commentators believe is a signal that investor risk appetite has returned for the longer term. However, “Zen International” believes this is indicative of a flight from a currency that is fundamentally flawed because the price of gold remains robust around the $1000 level with buyers offering strong support in the $990 region.
Equities continue to trade sideways indicating that the current rally has lost momentum and this may see gold soar in the event of a slide on the key global indices.
Still, “Zen International” sources suggest that the dollar may have another rally if the expected sell-off in equities is sharp. They don’t, however, expect the DXY to break resistance at or around the 78 level.
The firm re-affirmed its bullishness on precious metals in general and in gold in particular and urged clients to continue their acquisition of the metal on dips in prices.
“Zen International” says the US housing market is set to fall by another 25%.
“Zen International” sources say that the firm’s analysts are convinced of further downside probability in the beleaguered US real estate market as unemployment rises and consumers struggle to get mortgages.
One of the “Zen International” sources said that a drop of another 20% was possible adding that the US government’s attempts to keep mortgage rates low were largely irrelevant when only the most creditworthy consumers are able to obtain a loan.
The US housing market has been in a severe downturn for more than 2 years and this was exacerbated after the subprime mortgage debacle saw banks withdraw the availability of credit for home purchases following unprecedented writedowns of mortgage backed securities.
Foreclosures in several states are continuing as homeowners struggle to meet mortgage payments because of high rates on adjustable rate mortgage products or because of unemployment.
“Zen International” analysts suggest that the rate of unemployment in the US is likely to exceed 10% as companies resort to cutting costs in the absence of the revenue that would normally be generated by sales to consumers.
“Zen International” says that the foreclosure problem adds to the inventory of unsold properties on the market and this serves to drive prices down further. The firm advises US clients to avoid property purchase unless absolutely necessary.
