The Temple of the Spirit and Psalm 24
Psalm 24 reads as follows from the NIV version of the Bible:
The earth is the LORD’s, and everything in it,
the world, and all who live in it;
2 for he founded it upon the seas
and established it upon the waters.
3 Who may ascend the hill of the LORD ?
Who may stand in his holy place?
4 He who has clean hands and a pure heart,
who does not lift up his soul to an idol
or swear by what is false.
5 He will receive blessing from the LORD
and vindication from God his Savior.
6 Such is the generation of those who seek him,
who seek your face, O God of Jacob.

7 Lift up your heads, O you gates;
be lifted up, you ancient doors,
that the King of glory may come in.
8 Who is this King of glory?
The LORD strong and mighty,
the LORD mighty in battle.
9 Lift up your heads, O you gates;
lift them up, you ancient doors,
that the King of glory may come in.
10 Who is he, this King of glory?
The LORD Almighty—
he is the King of glory.

This psalm speaks of the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. Everything on earth belongs to the Lord and the emphasis in verse 1 is that the invitation is to all persons who live on the earth.
Verses 1 through 6 talk about who may go to the temple with an emphasis in verse 4 on the condition of the soul before the LORD.
Verses 7 through 10 portray the arrival of the King of Glory coming into the temple and entering the doorways. There is the call to action as those ancient doorways are to lift up their gates and freely allow the entrance of the Lord.
This images the uplifting of the soul to the infusion and indwelling of the Holy Spirit as the temple described is the soul of the individual person.
The imaging in these final verses breathes the Presence of the invitation of the Holy Spirit.
Breath, like the wind is there and can be felt, but is not necessarily seen.
In the gospel of John, Chapter 20 verses 21 and 22 it says:
21 Again Jesus said, “Peace be with you! As the Father has sent me, I am sending you.” 22 And with that he breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit.
According to Biblical Scholars, the gates described in this psalm with lifting doors did not exist at the time of the writing of this psalm.
This psalm is prophetic to the infusion of the Holy Spirit and the gift of the Holy Spirit mentioned in the gospels and continuing on in the early church through today.
1 Corinthians 6.19 says,” Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own.
1 Corinthians 3.16 says, “Don’t you know that you yourselves are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit lives in you?
There is the idea of readiness and being at the doorway ready.
Proverbs Chapter 8 verse 34 says, “Blessed is the man who listens to me, watching daily at my doors, waiting at my doorway.”
This verse in proverbs particularly relates to verse 6 in this psalm which says,
6 Such is the generation of those who seek him,
who seek your face, O God of Jacob.

There is the call to listen to the Spirit and be at the doorways of the Spirit watching daily. There is no reason to skip even a day in seeking the Lord and the invitation to be at the doorways is daily.
Acts 14 verse 27 says,” On arriving there, they gathered the church together and reported all that God had done through them and how he had opened the door of faith to the Gentiles.”
There is the door of faith that will be opened and in this case the Lord used early church members as instruments towards opening the door of faith.
Verses 7 through 10 have a creationist theme, the call is from the ancients, from the very origins and verse 2 also strongly alludes to creation and the very foundations and creation of the earth.
Mankind hasn’t evolved to a state where they are now worthy but the call is from the origins of time echoing into the present.
The Lord created the souls he is calling into relationship.
The call is to the very friendship with the Lord.
Revelation 3.20 says,”
Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with him, and he with me.
This vision is both temporal and eternal.
