livestock mixed farming UNDER rainfed ecosystem
Livestock production is the backbone of agrarian economics in rainfed areas. About 80 % of the farmers in the semiarid rainfed deserts derive their livelihood from the livestock centric agricultural production system. Various crop- livestock – soil water use system operate in the area Location – specific combination occur under district & sub district eco-systems. The majority of large ruminant i.e. rearing of cows & buffaloes are common in areas where some water or irrigation exists. This is mixed maize based cattle – buffalo farming which brings economic improvement by utilizing agriwaste, draught power, animal transport & farm yard manure combinations as profitable enterprises than mono- cropping or livestock (Dairy) farming on commercial basis.
The other more & most popular combination existing in the low – rainfall to no- rain fall years among nomadian livestock farmers. These farmers have a proportion of 20% at national level among farming households in india. They are nomaids or pastorial gaddis or migratory livestock owners, they cultivate such crops giving then more fodder than grains as livestock is centric to such agrarian economy.
Some studies on individual crop or livestock production increases have been studies & some efforts or intervention made a headway, such interventions were related either to healthcare or breed improvement alone. A composite – mixed – farming study – cum – intervention in postural & nomadian livestock – land – use system is thus needed. It is proposed to
- Define various systems as detailed above.
Have a compararison of various systems,one need to
- To identify best suited low – input –eco – friendly crop – animal – soil use productive system.
- Identify the strong & weak points of each system so defined.
- Pin – point intervention strategies & study their end – results ( improvement & efficiency scores)
- To drive recommendation & policy formulations for similar ecosystems or production system.
Importance aspects of proposed study
- Inventory assessment survey
- Holistic agriculture cum animal husbandry participation and role in economics of the system/ s.
- Factors effecting livestock production vis – in – vis crop – soil – water conservation & utilization combinations and associations.
